Social Entrepreneurship and the M.B.A.

The notion of using a management degree to do good while doing well has grown in popularity on today's business school campuses, where an ever-increasing number of students plan on putting their business savvy to use within the nonprofit sector. The recession has led many applicants to reevaluate their priorities and determine what they want to do with their lives, often trading jobs with status and hefty paychecks for careers with a positive social impact.
In order to keep and develop the competitive edge needed to survive in today's uncertain economy, nonprofits must run themselves just like any other successful business. When you need to run a tight ship, as is often the case within this sector, business skills are essential. So are people skills, management skills, financial-analysis skills, IT skills—the list goes on. That's where the M.B.A. degree comes in.

Lowering the Volume for Motorcyclists

(ISNS)—Before hopping on his motorcycle, Michael Carley puts on earplugs, followed by his helmet. It's a step many riders take. After accelerating, most of the sound that a rider can hear isn't from the bike engine or other vehicles on the road, but from the air rushing over and around his helmet.
Click here to find out more!
The helmet Carley wears is designed and tested for comfort and impact protection—but not for sound protection. Noise inside the helmet can reach rock-concert levels when traveling at highway speeds.
Carley, a mechanical engineer, has gathered a group of engineers and psychologists to study how to minimize helmet noise. The group includes researchers from two U.K. universities, the University of Bath, where Carley works, and nearby Bath Spa University. They are studying how to protect riders from hearing damage and reduce the potential distraction that noise poses to riders.

Best Car for the Money Awards 2011

Carmakers are finally starting to get it: Shoppers want value, which means giving buyers more bang for their buck. But, bang-for-your-buck doesn’t just mean offering more bells and whistles at a lower price than the competition. Now that people are hanging on to their cars longer, new cars should add value to their owner’s lives from the day they’re driven off the dealer’s lot to the day they’re traded in.
That’s what the 2011 U.S. News Best Car for the Money award winners do. The awards combine the U.S. News Automotive rankings as well as five-year total cost of ownership data from the analysts at TrueCar.com. The results highlight cars that not only delight car reviewers, but also provide lower than average ownership costs. That combination means that the winners are both great values and great cars.

Victorian hospital wants to card unruly patients

A MELBOURNE hospital with one of the nation's busiest emergency departments wants to introduce a yellow and red card system to deal with drunk, violent patients.
The proposal comes as the Victorian government's election promise to have armed guards at hospital emergency departments was strongly opposed by medical groups at a parliamentary hearing today.
Alfred Health general counsel Bill O'Shea said the card system, which operates at Luton and Dunstable Hospital in the United Kingdom, could be introduced at The Alfred in Melbourne.
It would only be used for patients in non-life-threatening situations and not be applied in response to any behaviour stemming from a physical or mental illness.
If someone waiting for treatment became violent they would be warned, and if they continued to misbehave they could be red-carded and escorted out.
The offender could potentially be banned from the hospital, except in life-threatening situations, for up to six months.
"The real issue we're looking at is the intoxicated patient - the Friday night patient, the Saturday night patient, who comes in and causes mayhem in the emergency department, not just to staff but to other patients," he told the hearing.
"So if they've got a cut head they can treat their cut head at home or they can go to a GP or they can go somewhere else, but they won't be treated in the emergency department if they're going to endanger the health and safety of staff or fellow patients."
Mr O'Shea said the state government should legislate to absolve medical staff from liability if someone injured themselves after being ejected from a hospital due to violent behaviour.
Police also should be more willing to charge people who are violent inside the hospital for behaviour that would be unacceptable on the street, he said.
But Alfred Health chief executive Andrew Way said he was absolutely opposed to the government's proposal to put protective services officers (PSOs) in hospitals.
He said hospital staff were concerned having armed guards would encourage people to enter hospitals ready to do battle.
"There is a greater fear about our staff being armed than not armed," Mr Way said.
Australian Medical Association Victoria vice president Dr Stephen Parnis said guns in hospitals would lead to more violence.
"We are absolutely 100 per cent against the prospect of armed guards in hospitals," he told the hearing.
Ambulance Victoria's Simon Thomson said paramedics thought the security situation at hospitals was adequate.
The government promised $21 million to fund 120 PSOs at hospital emergency departments before it won office last November.
Following heavy criticism, Police and Emergency Services Minister Peter Ryan in April sent the policy to be reviewed by the Drugs and Crime Prevention committee, adding the funds would still be available to improve security at hospitals.

  • Boy, 8, presented with abdominal pain
  • GP referral letter not "adequately consulted"
  • Died during surgery after appendix burst
A LITTLE boy is dead because many of the doctors who treated him failed to diagnose that he was critically ill with a burst appendix, an inquest has found today.
Jacob Belim died at the Royal Alexandria Hospital for Children at Westmead Hospital in Sydney's west, on March 28, 2009, after suffering vomiting, abdominal pain and a fever for several days.

A Coroner has found that eight-year-old Jacob died of heart failure as a result of "septic...shock consequent on a burst appendix".

Jacob was treated at Liverpool Hospital in Sydney's southwest prior to his transferral to Westmead, but staff there did not make reference to appendicitis as a possible diagnosis.

Deputy State Coroner Scott Mitchell criticised the examination of the little boy by Dr Claire Ferreira at Liverpool Hospital, who he says failed "to ensure prompt antibiotic therapy and adequate hydration" which "placed Jacob in danger."

He described Jacob's time at Liverpool Hospital, which doesn't offer specialty paediatric surgery, as "a tragic waste of time".

"I think it is clear that Dr Ferreira's care of Jacob was wanting in a number of respects," he said.

"Her failure in the course of her examination adequately to consult the notes and read the GP's letter of referral, her failure to consider appendicitis, at least as a different diagnosis and her failure to arrange an ultrasound led to a misdiagnosis and contributed to a degree of uncertainty, confusion and delay in Jacob's subsequent treatment."

He died during emergency surgery which was performed after he did not respond to the "maximum paediatric intensive care treatment" at Westmead, the inquest found.

Obama presses Xi Jinping on 'rules'

US President Barack Obama has urged China to play by the 'same rules' in the global economy but voiced hope for co-operation in a key introductory meeting with leader-in-waiting Xi Jinping.
China's vice president, who is expected to take the helm next year, largely focused on positives, pledging in general terms that his nation would improve its widely criticised record on human rights.
Xi made the rounds in Washington as Tibetans and others staged noisy protests outside most venues.
At the Pentagon, he was given a rare honour ceremony with a 19-gun salute and booming cannons.
Obama, welcoming Xi to the Oval Office, said Washington welcomed a 'prosperous' China and praised its 'extraordinary development over the last two decades,' but stressed that power came with 'increased responsibilities.'
'We want to work with China to make sure that everybody is working by the same rules of the road when it comes to the world economic system,' Obama said alongside a relaxed-looking Xi, as senior aides and translators stood by.
'That includes ensuring that there is a balanced trading flow not only between the United States and China but around the world.'
The US leader also raised concerns about human rights, saying Washington would 'continue to emphasize what we believe is the importance of realising the aspirations and rights of all people'.
Speaking later at a luncheon for Xi at the State Department, Vice President Joe Biden sharply criticised China's decision to join Russia in vetoing a UN resolution condemning violence in Syria, as well as Beijing's rights record.
'We have been clear about our concern over the areas in which, from our perspective, conditions in China have deteriorated and about the plight of several very prominent individuals,' he said.
Xi responded that China had made 'tremendous and well-recognised achievements' in human rights but added: 'There is always room for improvement.'
'We will, in light of China's national conditions, continue to take concrete and effective policies and measures to promote social fairness, justice and harmony and push forward China's course of human rights,' he said.
Xi heads Wednesday to Iowa, where he will meet Midwesterners from his first trip to the United States in 1985, before heading to California where he is likely to watch a Los Angeles Lakers basketball game.

Aubrey O'Day Shows Off Her Assets While Clubbing in Hollywood (Pictures)

Aubrey O'Day at the Verizon Party in Hollywood

Aubrey O'Day (Pacific Coast News) Aubrey O'Day arrived at the Kardashian Kollection launch party on Wednesday in a magenta and black striped bandage dress that left little to the imagination. When you're celebrating a fashion line with a reality star queen who's about to get married, you have to do something to stand out!

O'Day eventually headed out of the Kardashian promotion bash and met up with Alexis Bellino at an LG Revolution launch party. She and the "goody two shoes" Real Housewives of Orange County star sipped on Tequila Revolucion in the VIP section at The Sayers Club.

We can't imagine Bellino's helicopter-husband was very happy about his wifey hanging out with the not subtle O'Day.

Qatada deportation talks continue

A radical cleric who poses a serious risk to the UK's national security was free to walk the streets as talks continued to deport him as soon as possible.
Abu Qatada was released under some of the toughest conditions imposed since the September 11 terror attacks and is free to leave his home for just two hours a day.
His release from Long Lartin high-security jail in Evesham, Worcestershire, on Monday came as Home Office Minister James Brokenshire arrived in Jordan for talks with government officials in the capital Amman.
Qatada was let out after applying for bail when human rights judges in Europe ruled he could not be deported without assurances from Jordan that evidence gained through torture would not be used against him.
Home Secretary Theresa May now has just three months to show the government is making significant progress in securing those assurances or risk Qatada, once described by a judge as Osama bin Laden's right-hand man in Europe, being freed from his bail conditions.
Last week, Prime Minister David Cameron told King Abdullah of the 'frustrating and difficult' position Britain was in over its efforts to deport the Islamist radical.
But Ayman Odeh, the Jordanian legislative affairs minister, said the country had passed a constitutional amendment in September to ban the use of evidence obtained through torture.
'We are confident that once we have the chance to make this statement through the diplomatic channels... (it) will be taken into consideration,' he told Sky News yesterday.
'We are now making the necessary arrangements to do such assurances through the British government. Very soon something will be done for this purpose.'
Qatada's mother Aisha Othman has also called for the cleric to be sent back to Jordan.
'We want him home now,' she told the Daily Mail, adding: 'I don't know why the British keep him. There is no good reason.'
Former security minister Baroness Pauline Neville-Jones said Qatada posed a future risk rather than an immediate threat to the UK.
She told the BBC Radio 4 Today program: 'He's unlikely to be much of a risk at the moment under that degree of surveillance, but what we know is that's not going to be a permanent situation if an agreement can't be somehow found within three months with the Jordanian government, so there's a long-term risk there.'
But Conservative former Home Office minister David Mellor said Mrs May should simply ignore the ruling by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and 'put him on a plane this morning'.
He blamed 'paralysis' within the coalition for Mrs May's failure to act.
'A combination of (Justice Secretary) Ken Clarke and the Liberal Democrats makes this a political fight she feels she cannot win so she is funking it,' he said.
Under the terms of his bail, Qatada, 51, is banned from taking his youngest child to school, must stay inside his home for 22 hours a day, and cannot talk to anyone who has not been vetted by the security services first.
If he should meet a friend during either of his two one-hour periods outside his London home each day, he must make his excuses and leave.
A summary of the bail order, published by the Special Immigration Appeals Commission, also showed he is banned from meeting 27 people, including new al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, radical cleric Abu Hamza and terror suspect Babar Ahmad.
Qatada is also banned from using the internet and mobile phones, as well as meeting or communicating with anyone who is subject to Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measures, the Government's replacement for control orders.
The bail terms also ban him from visiting mosques, leading prayers, giving lectures or preaching, other than to offer advice to his wife and children at his home.
The cleric, who must wear an electronic tag and check in with the monitoring firm up to four times a day as he enters and leaves his home, is also prohibited from making any statement without the prior approval of the Home Secretary.
Qatada, also known as Omar Othman, was convicted in his absence in Jordan of involvement with terror attacks in 1998 and has featured in hate sermons found on videos in the flat of one of the September 11 bombers.
Since 2001, when fears of the domestic terror threat rose in the aftermath of the attacks, he has challenged, and ultimately thwarted, every attempt by the government to detain and deport him.
Last month, the Strasbourg-based European Convention on Human Rights (EUHR) ruled that sending Qatada back to face terror charges without assurances that evidence gained through torture would not be used against him would be a 'flagrant denial of justice'.
The ruling was the first time the court found an extradition would be in violation of Article 6 of the EUHR, the right to a fair trial, which is enshrined in UK law under the Human Rights Act.

Bahrain Shi'ites mark revolt anniversary

Bahraini security forces have fanned out across the island nation in unprecedented numbers as Shi'ites marked the one-year anniversary of their uprising against the country's Sunni rulers.
Authorities sent troop reinforcements and armoured vehicles to the predominantly Shi'ite villages around the capital Manama to prevent people from gathering and answering the call of the main opposition movement, Al Wefaq.
The government meanwhile threatened to take legal action against the organisers of protests on Monday that turned violent. This could herald a new crackdown on Al Wefaq, which until last year was tolerated but which has suffered sporadic prosecutions and detentions after it took the lead in last year's protests.
At least 40 people have been killed during a year of unprecedented political unrest in Bahrain, the Gulf country hardest hit by upheaval during 2011's Arab Spring protests.
The kingdom's ruling dynasty has promised reforms to end the upheaval, although it refuses to make the far-reaching changes the protesters and Al Wefaq, have demanded. These include ending the monarchy's ability to select the government, set key state policies and appoint most of the parliament members.
Police on Tuesday fired tear gas at protesters in an apparent attempt to pre-empt a repeat of the marches the night before, in which protesters made their largest attempt in months to retake the city's central roundabout. Pearl Square had served as the epicentre of weeks of anti-government protests last year, and its reoccupation would be a major boost for the movement.
The government statement said many protesters on Monday left a pre-authorised route in Manama, turning it into a riot after police arrived. It said Al Wefaq was responsible for the violence, because it failed to 'control the crowd (and) that jeopardised the safety of the people along a busy main road'.
Legal procedures will be taken against the organisers of the march, Tuesday's statement said.
Al Wefaq rejected the claim, and said on Tuesday that the 'unfounded accusations' are part of the rulers' efforts to discredit the group.
'They have used excessive force against the people throughout all this time, but people keep coming back to the streets to insist on their demand to have a role in the decisions about their country,' said Abdul Jalil Khalil, a former Al Wefaq parliamentarian.
Shi'ites account for about 70 per cent of Bahrain's population of some 525,000 people, but say they have faced decades of discrimination and are blocked from top political and security posts.
'After years of broken promises for change, Bahrain exploded last year,' Khalil said. 'We are still here and we want serious solution and meaningful reform.'
Sunni rulers made token concessions in June ahead of US-supported reconciliation talks between the monarchy and the opposition. A so-called national dialogue began in July, but Al Wefaq delegates pulled out of the talks, saying the government was not willing to discuss political reform.
Since then, no talks between the monarchy and the opposition have taken place, Khalil said. Street battles between security forces and protesters still flare up almost every day in the predominantly Shi'ite villages around the capital.

Boy asks Duchess to be his Valentine

An eight-year-old boy has stepped into Prince William's shoes on Valentine's Day, handing the Duchess of Cambridge flowers, and a card saying 'I love you'.
Catherine, 30, was without her royal husband of less than 10 months on Tuesday as the future British king completes a six-week RAF tour of duty as a search and rescue helicopter pilot in the Falklands.
Keeping herself busy, the Duchess visited an alcohol-free bar in Liverpool run by Action on Addiction, a charity of which she became patron last month.
On arrival, Catherine was met by Jaqson Johnston-Lynch, who had an armful of gifts for the brunette Duchess.
'I'm saying 'Happy Valentine's Day, your Royal Highness. I'm sorry Prince William can't be here',' said Jaqson according to London's Evening Standard newspaper.
'I have wrote (sic) in the card 'Dear Kate, Happy Valentine's Day, I love you, from Jaqson'.'
Along with the card came a cupcake and bunch of red roses, while Catherine later sampled a smoothie, made from bananas, almonds, honey, milk and a dash of cream, and named in her honour, The Duchess.
Tuesday's visit to Liverpool was Catherine's first official solo public appearance.
In November it was announced that Catherine would become patron for Action on Addiction, along with a children's hospice, London's National Portrait Gallery, and the Art Room.
While at her Anglesey home in north Wales, the Duchess will also volunteer privately for the Scout Association.

Fifteen protesters arrested in Russia

Political opposition is building against Vladimir Putin in Russia with more than a dozen protesters arrested, after they demanded an 'end to his dictatorship' .
Fifteen demonstrators were taken away by police, after they rallied outside the country's main electorate offices, demanding an end to Putin's rule.
'It isn't the people's will, but (the will) of those who play up to the president, those in United Russia, those in the presidential administration - that's the government. We don't decide anything and we have to fight against that,' said protester Vera Lavreshina.
Elections are due on March 4, but many Russians admit they expect Putin to retain power.

Israel accuses Iran over Thai blasts

Israel accuses Iran over Thai blasts

Updated: 07:02, Wednesday February 15, 2012

Israel has accused Iran of responsibility for a series of bomb blasts in Thailand, a day after attacks on its embassies in India and Georgia.
'The attempted attack in Bangkok proves once again that Iran and its proxies are continuing to act in the ways of terror and the latest attacks are an example of that,' said Barak, who is currently in Singapore but spent several hours in the Thai capital on Sunday.
'Iran and Hezbollah are uninhibited sources of terror, they are a danger to the stability of the region and a danger to the stability of the world,' he said, in remarks released by his Tel Aviv office.
Bangkok police said one man, believed to be an Iranian national, was seriously wounded when a device he was carrying exploded in one of a series of blasts in a residential area of the Thai capital.
An Iranian identity card was found next to the wounded man, whose legs were blown off.
The explosions came just 24 hours after two bombs targeted Israeli embassy personnel in India and Georgia, leaving one female diplomat critically wounded.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promptly blamed Iran, describing it as 'the biggest exporter of terror in the world.'
He also accused the Islamic republic of being responsible, along with Lebanon's Shi'ite militia Hezbollah, for a series of failed attacks against Israeli targets in Thailand and Azerbaijan in mid-January.

UN General Assembly to vote on Syria

UN General Assembly to vote on Syria

The United Nations General Assembly will vote on Thursday on a new resolution calling on Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad to put a stop to deadly attacks on civilians, diplomats said.
The resolution drawn up by Saudi Arabia and Qatar, which was given to member nations on Tuesday, also expresses support for the Arab League's plan to end the 11-month crackdown in Syria and calls for the naming of a UN special envoy.
The move comes after Russia and China vetoed a second Security Council resolution on the crisis in Syria on February 4, because they said it was 'unbalanced'.
Russia and China are expected to oppose the new text but no one can veto resolutions in the 193-nation General Assembly, though they carry less weight. Diplomats said the measure was almost sure to pass.
'We'll see if this new text earns more or less than the 133 votes given to the first resolution' adopted on December 19, one diplomat said.
That measure denounced human rights violations in Syria, where activists say more than 6,000 have died since protests against Assad's government erupted last March.
'That will be the measure of success, but this time, the content is more political in nature,' the diplomat said on condition of anonymity.
An Egyptian diplomat said his country, which presides over the Arab group in the Assembly, wanted to see a vote on the resolution 'as soon as possible'.
The draft resolution does not refer to an Arab League request for a joint peacekeeping mission with the United Nations, which has been met in some Western capitals with caution.
The Security Council has yet to adopt any resolutions on the situation in Syria. Russia and China also vetoed a draft in October.
The General Assembly draft is similar to the one blocked in the Council.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay told the General Assembly on Monday that 'crimes against humanity are likely to have been committed' in Syria since March 2011.
'Independent, credible and corroborated accounts indicate that these abuses have taken place as part of a widespread and systematic attack on civilians,' Pillay said. Damascus on Tuesday flatly rejected her claims.

Blake Lively Opens Up About Love Life, Dreams in New 'Elle'

Celebs at the Elle Style Awards 3 Blake Lively poses for photographs on the red carpet of the Elle Style Awards, Grand Connaught Rooms in London. (Pacific Coast News) Blake Lively (Pacific Coast News) As the enviable Serena van der Woodsen in Gossip Girl, Blake Lively has been with more than her share of hot guys. In real life, however, the beautiful blonde is a little more discriminating.

Blake opened up about her sex life in a new interview appearing in the March 2012 issue of Elle, revealing she's been with only four men. "I've never been with anyone that's not a boyfriend. If I spend time with a man, it's because there's somebody that I know well who has been a friend for a while."

That's not all the young star had on her mind. She also dished on her close relationship with French shoe designer Christian Louboutin, and her desire to have children.

Being a fashionista, it's understandable Lively dreams of having "a few girls one day." Her back-up plan may surprise you though: "If not girls, they better be trannies," she says. "Because I have some amazing shoes and bags and stories that need to be appreciated."

Primetime Fashion: Bachelor Recap Episode Five

Fresh off a recent viewing of Moneyball, we at StyleBistro could barely contain our excitement
when it became apparent that this week’s episode of the Bachelor was baseball-themed. But where the Brad Pitt vehicle regales the merits of prizing stats over gut feel and folklore, Ben’s group date made a case for good old fashioned hot pants, prompting the usually PG-rated Kasey B to cry out “Bitches!” in exasperation, positing Blakely in the role of unforgiving coach (“I busted my ass out there because I thought you guys wanted it just as bad!”) and resulting in the flame-haired beauty Jennifer taking on the role of rookie who let the big game slip through her fingers... and then gets cut. “I guess I just wonder what I did wrong,” she tearfully wondered aloud as her limo drove away at the episode’s end. Oh honey, you struck out. And nice as Ben may be, he doesn’t suffer losers.

This may or may not be why Courtney keeps insisting, “I think I’m winning.” Regardless, it seems like as good a time as any for a quick break to review The Model’s soundbytes in a new sub-feature we’re calling #ShitCourtneySays. Here, a few highlights:

“Who knew strippers could play baseball?” (in reference to VIP Cocktail Waitress Blakely).
“I hope I’m a sight for sore eyes, because after his date with Elyse his eyes are probably pretty sore.”
“It did cross my mind: I may not be seeing [Elyse] later. I hope I got her number—I could use a personal trainer.”
“I don’t know if he’s ever skinny-dipped with a model before.”

And, we’re back. The fifth episode also had the distinction of being the most fashion-challenged installment yet—from Ben’s cringeworthy self-proclaimed “Latin Swagger” ensemble (a white linen horror show modeled on his one-on-one date with Nicki) to Jaime’s Miss America-worthy rose ceremony gown, a pink sequined concoction the likes of which we haven’t seen since the Saved By the Bell prom.

And there was more where that came from: Besides the fact that Elyse nailed every man
repelling trick in the book (reminding Ben that not only did she quit her job and bail on her best friend’s wedding to stalk him on TV, but also promptly suggesting they get married on the spot), she also opted to wear a low-rent one-shouldered mini in a shade to match her perma-tan. And paired it with orange fingernails, lest you doubt her commitment to taking things in a tangerine direction. Ben could hardly be blamed for suggesting, “I have an idea—I think we should jump off the side of this massive boat … it’s a long way to the bottom.”

Meanwhile, at the post-game beach party, Kasey B. won the evening’s rose, but had the unfortunate distinction of being worst dressed, clad in a peach and white knit 80s-style sweater dress resembling a fisherman’s net, thrown over a ribbed white tank and topped off with a starfish ring. It was Pretty in Pink meets Little Mermaid. And not in a good way.

Needless to say there was not a lot of competition for Best Dressed. In the end it was repeated sartorial high-scorer Casey S. who emerged the frontrunner for her rose ceremony look, wearing a chic peach minidress with a pleated and structured bodice, accessorized with a gold chain belt and a beach wave ’do.

Best Undressed obviously went to skinny-dipping pusher Courtney for her bathrobe and
“innocent” white lacy underpinnings costume, accessorized with a bottle of massage lotion and red wine. The vibe was very Demi Moore in Disclosure and about as subtle as an anvil to the face.

Still, we can tolerate almost anything so long as we don't have to listen to David Gray’s “This Year’s Love” again. Really Bachelor producers? Every episode? The man has surely purchased a house made of denim on the royalties alone at this point.
